Walk through the oldest part of Rome, up to the Gianicolo hill and then enjoy the best views of the city.
Meet your guide in the middle of Gianicolo, in front of Faro degli Italiani, a marvellous liberty lighthouse overlooking Rome, donated by Italian emigrated to Argentina to honour their country of origin. From there you'll walk on through Passeggiata del Gianicolo. Stop along the way to listen to the history of monuments like the statue of Anita Garibaldi or the memorial of the Roman Republic Constitution, one of the most advanced constitutions of the second half of the 19th century, that inspired modern European democracies of the 20th. Experience one of the best view of Rome from the top of the hill, take some photo and enjoy some free time. In the big square of this terrace stands the statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the most famous hero of Italian independence.
Descend the hill from the opposite side of the climb. Stroll towards the monumental Acqua Paola fountain, called by locals er Fontanone ("big fountain" in Roman slang). It is one of the most characteristic fountains in Rome and it has been the setting for many Italian and foreign movies in recent years. Next to the fountain, stop at the church of San Pietro in Montorio, which was built on the site where, according to tradition, the apostle Peter was crucified upside down on the cross. The church is extremely rich in art; the frescoes and statues in its chapels, the sculptures of the angels on the sides of the altar and Bramante's temple in the cloister make this complex an unmissable treasure of Renaissance art in Rome.
Lastly, reach the historic Trastevere district. Comfortably sit in a cosy and intimate wine bar and enjoy some typical Roman finger food, like bruschetta paired with a glass of wine or beer.
