Good to know

Only in Holland can you cycle ‘through' a museum. Here, you'll find the famous bike underpass flanked on either side by the museum's atrium. Loved by locals and tourists alike, it's also popular with buskers because of its great acoustics.
If you visit in spring and summer prepare for crowds. Save time by buying tickets in advance (at least 2 weeks) and visiting during the week between 2pm to 5pm. On weekends arrive before it opens.
Architect Pierre Cuypers sneakily included himself in the building's design. You can see him peeking around the corner (look high above the right side of the entrance).
There's no fear of visiting when it's closed. It's open 365 days of the year from 9am to 5pm.
On a nice day the museum's manicured garden is well worth a stroll. Not only does it feature temporary sculpture exhibits, in the right season it'll be blooming with the country's most beloved flower: the tulip.
It's famous for Rembrandt's ‘The Night Watch', but you also don't want to miss Vermeer's ‘Milkmaid', Van Gogh's ‘Self-portrait', Anthonius Mor's ‘Portrait of Sir Thomas Gresham' and Jan Willem Pieneman's ‘The Battle of Waterloo', to name a few.
It's free for children under 18, but students will have to pay full price.
Most don't realize that the library here is jaw-droppingly beautiful. It's the biggest and oldest art library in the Netherlands.
The Rijks restaurant is the best place to eat near the big three museums. It has one Michelin star and serves up creative, traditionally inspired dishes.

The inside story

If you visit Amsterdam for the first time, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam or simply Rijksmuseum is a must see! It is the most important museum in the Netherlands, as well as the maximum emblem of Dutch identity. As a perfect abstract of art and history of the region, this national museum includes 80 galleries that house 8,000 art objects which tell a story from the distant 1200 until the 2000s. It's no wonder, the Rijksmuseum is among Amsterdam's top tourist destinations, so if you are going to visit it on your own or take a guided tour, you better take care of the tickets in advance.

The Rijksmuseum houses the largest collection of works from the golden age of Flemish art (from 1584 to 1702), as well as a collection of Asian art. Without a doubt, this is a fascinating story, which will leave art enthusiasts breathless. The museum was founded in The Hague in 1800 and eight years later it was moved to Amsterdam at the behest of Louis Napoleon, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte.
