What to expect
Learn about the Eldridge Street Synagogue, the first great house of worship built by East European Jews in America, and follow the footsteps of the synagogue's immigrant founders. Begin the tour in the entry level and learn about the history of the building and the Lower East Side. Explore the exhibits with an expert guide and continue to the main sanctuary, where you will imagine what it would have felt like for a poor immigrant congregant to leave the grimy streets of the Lower East Side and enter this sanctuary. Appreciate the spiritual center of the Eldridge Street Synagogue and marvel at the 3,000-square-foot area. The central dome rises 50 feet above the floor, and there is seating for 750 worshipers. Take in the beauty as the sunlight streams through dozens of stained glass windows. Watch the various colors dance along the floor. Discover the painted decoration, which covers every imaginable surface and polished wood shines. Continue to the upper balcony where you will hear stories about the women's role in the history. Built as seating for the women of the Orthodox congregation, this large gallery has seats arranged in tiers, reaching across the back of the nave above the side bays of the sanctuary to the eastern wall. Learn about the restoration of the building and have all of your questions answered!
