The inside story
Corcovado is one of the most representative icons of Rio de Janeiro. It is located in the Tijuca Forest, the world's largest urban forest. From the top of the mountain, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city of Rio de Janeiro and take stunning pictures.
With a peak of 2,330 feet, Corcovado is visible from great distances and is known worldwide for the Christ the Redeemer statue located at the top of the mountain. The mountain is located to the west of downtown Rio de Janeiro but can still be seen from afar.
Since 1992, it is possible to climb one of the 54 routes available on the southern part of the hill. From the peak's platform, the panoramic view includes downtown Rio, the Sugarloaf Mountain, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the Maracanã Stadium, and several favelas of the city.
From the Corcovado station in Cosme Velho, trains depart every half hour and will bring you through the Tijuca Forest to the top of Corcovado. The ride to the top takes around 20 minutes and a maximum of 345 passengers can be transported every hour. This railway was inaugurated by Emperor Dom Pedro II in 1884.
