The inside story
Located in the neighborhood of Urca in Rio de Janeiro, the Sugarloaf Mountain is a peak situated at the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the icons of the city; its name is said to refer to its resemblance to the traditional shape of concentrated refined loaf sugar. The mountain is famous for its cableway and panoramic views of the city and beyond. The cable car ride to the top of the mount happens in two stages: first at the boarding station to the Urca Mount (224 meters), and secondly from the Urca Mount to the top of Sugarloaf (396 meters).
